How To Stay Motivated When Building A Business To Quit Your Day Job
The quest to building a microbusiness to provide you with a passive income stream large enough for you to be able to quit your day job is a long road not taken by many. Before you go ahead with this exciting and rewarding opportunity, I have to warn you: you do not have an easy journey ahead of you.
You’re probably ripping and roaring to get started, but before you actually do anything, you need to practice the art of goal-setting and ask yourself one simple question:
WHY do you want to quit your day job?
What you need to do right now is to get yourself a piece of paper and freewrite. You could choose to do this exercise using a word processor as well. But for this exercise, you need to write down every single reason you might have that makes you want to quit your day job RIGHT NOW.
You need to write down all these reasons with excruciating detail. Do you have a desire to be location independent, be mobile and work wherever you want while travelling across the world? Do you have a burning need to control your own destiny so you won’t have to rely on something as unstable as job security? Maybe you hate your boss, and for some reason’t cannot get along with your coworkers. Whatever your reasons might be, just right it down — it doesn’t matter how complicated or shallow it might sound to everyone else because we all have our individual reasons why we want to go on this journey of freedom from our full-time job.
Write for as long as you can, until you have every single motivating reason down on paper. It doesn’t matter if your motivation document is as short as a few paragraphs or as long as 20 pages — the important thing is that you actually get it down on paper.
Once you’re done with this document, keep it somewhere you see it everyday. Print it out if you typed it on your computer. Nobody else has to know about this document (although having an accountability buddy might help), but what’s important is that you keep it with you at all times.
Why is this activity so important? Because it’s almost a sure thing that you’re going to lose motivation to accomplish your goals along the way. Just like diets and exercise programs, our excitement levels end up going down over time which is when we fall back on old habits and keep on doing the same old thing. This goal document will be the fuel that keeps your fire burning. When you wake up in the morning or you get home from work (depending on when you choose to work on your microbusinesses) and you’re tempted to skip your activities for the day, bring out this piece of paper and read it over, even add on to it if you like. This will keep you motivated to finish your tasks for the day and help you resist the temptation to skip your daily activities.
